You feel totally drained all day. But the second your head hits the pillow, your mind starts racing and your body feels tense.
In many forums right now, people are talking about this exact same painful cycle. They are so exhausted they can barely function, yet they cannot get a peaceful night of rest.
Why does this happen? Psychologists and sleep experts explain that your body is stuck in survival mode.
When you are burned out, your nervous system constantly pumps stress hormones to keep you moving through your busy day. When you finally try to rest, your body literally does not know how to turn off the alarm.
The good news is that you can fix this. However, you cannot just force your eyes closed and hope for the best. You have to send a clear, physical message to your body that the day is over and it is safe to power down.
Here are five simple psychology exercises to break the cycle and finally get some rest.
- Tense and release. Start at your toes and move up to your face. Tense your muscles for a few seconds, then let go. This forces the hidden physical tension out of your body before you sleep.
- The long exhale. Breathe in gently, but make your exhale slightly longer than your inhale. This slow breathing acts like a natural brake pedal for a racing heart.
- The brain dump. Keep a notebook by your bed. Write down every worry, idea, or task on your mind. This tells your brain that everything is safely on paper, so you do not need to hold onto it tonight.
- The evening pause. Sit quietly for just five minutes before going to your bedroom. Notice your stress without judging it. This small mindful pause helps lower the emotional build-up from the day.
- Daytime movement. Take a simple walk outside during the day. Moving your body helps clear out trapped stress energy so you are physically ready for sleep later.
Getting your sleep back is the first real step to healing burnout. When your body finally feels safe enough to rest, your mind and energy will naturally return.
